After a year of studies and evaluation, the SUNRISE project, which envisions a co-planning process in different neighborhoods in Europe, identified eight mobility actions that will potentially improve the mobility in different areas of the city of Budapest. Following this process, the eight projects were voted by citizens to set up a priority list and choose small-scale sustainable mobility interventions.
Törökőr, a local community in Budapest, obtained the majority of the votes and since early this year several mobility measures have been put into place in that area.
The selection was done through a public voting process that took place from November 2018 to January 2019. Votes were collected through an online platform but also using traditional hard paper and counted by the SUNRISE Core Group. This highly inclusive method gave young and elder citizens the opportunity to select the most needed measures in their neighbourhood.
Micro-investments, traffic calming by Tempo30 zone in key areas where kindergartens, schools, and pediatrician services are located and the development of the underpass for better conditions of walking and biking were among the most chosen measures and their implementation already started in Törökőr.
However, other measures began to be implemented recently in other areas of the city. This is the case of Újvidék square, where “Kiss and go” zones and specific new parking rules for parents have been tested. The overall objective is to create safer mobility conditions of schools, kindergartens, and nursery.
The actions have been accompanied by awareness-raising programs to educate people about how walking and biking and using the school bus will reduce congestion in the small streets and provide safe traffic in the morning rush hours.
