Urban municipalities across Europe are discussing how to encourage accessibility of urban spaces to all groups of society. In the SUNRISE Cluster Topic ‘Accessibility for all’, a broad framework of existing challenges of accessibility and potential solutions are well illustrated. The document highlights aspects of various barriers and their effects.
For example, mental barriers, such as personal insecurities, can hinder citizens to enter public squares or utilise public transport offers. Furthermore, technological barriers can limit access to mobility for certain groups. Thus, low-income households might not have access to mobile internet devices, which enable them to use e-ticketing or emerging mobility solutions.
Since tearing down these barriers is a significant undertaking for many urban municipalities, the SUNRISE assessment provides manifold examples of solutions from across Europe to integrate all groups of society.
